Food poisoning can result from dangerous bacteria and toxins entering into food and getting consumed. It often results in diarrhea, body weakness, vomiting and nausea. As most people who have experienced it on the past will testify, getting food poisoning can be a very unpleasant experience.
When most people hear of food poisoning, they often relate it to eating foods from restaurants and fast food outlets. This is actually not true as you can also develop food poisoning from foods you cook at home. To help you avoid this, here are some tips on preventing food poisoning.
1. Wash Worktops And Dishcloths.
Worktops should always be washed thoroughly before and after preparing food. This is especially true for preparing foods like fish, vegetables, poultry and raw meat. When left unwashed, germs and bacteria may start to grow on these worktops and washcloths, possibly leading to food poisoning.
2. Wash Your Hands Well
Washing your hands before touching, cooking or eating meals can help reduce your risk of food poisoning. It helps remove any bacteria that may have accumulated on your hands over the day’s activities. Also wash your hands before and after you touch raw foods, use a toilet, touch animals, or touch a dust bin.
3. Keep And Store Raw Meat Separately
When storing food, keep raw meat from foods like bread, salads and cookies. These foods are often not cooked before they are consumed so keeping them near raw meat can cause the accumulation of dangerous bacteria on them. Raw meat should be stored in the lowest shelves of fridges to avoid them dripping onto other foods.
4. Cook Food Properly
Ensure your food is properly cooked and steamed to ensure that bacteria in these foods are eliminated properly. Foods like raw chicken need to be properly steamed to eliminate campylobacter bacteria which may cause food poisoning.
5. Put Leftovers In The Fridge ASAP
When you find yourself having leftover food after a meal, make sure you freeze them as soon as possible. This can help inhibit growth of bacteria in these foods due to them being left at room temperature for too long. Also ensure you consume these leftover foods within 2 to 3 days to prevent them losing flavour.
